Hockey: Captain sends Kingston on way to title
THE Kingston Grammar School captain, Mun Wey-To, hit the 30th-minute goal which sent his side towards a 2-0 victory against Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe, in the under-18 section of the HA Youth Cup final at Birmingham University yesterday, writes Bill Colwill. Kingston retained the title they won last season after two previous years finishing runners-up in the under- 16 tournament.
This year's under-16 title was taken by St George's College, Weybridge, with goals from Andrew Crow and Andrew Colin in a 2-0 win against Simon Langton Grammar School from Canterbury, making their first appearance at this stage of the competition.
In the semi-final, Simon Langton, with two goals from David Matthews and one from Robert Marsh, built up a three- goal lead only to be pegged back by Trent College to 3-3 and then winning 4-2 on penalty strokes.
Kingston also required penalty strokes to beat Millfield after drawing 1-1. The winning stroke from Guy Fordham was knocked against the bar by Millfield's goalkeeper, Steven Bayer - it landed on his helmet and fell into the net.
In the second half of the final, only a dramatic save by the Kingston goalkeeper Alex Malpas-Sands kept them on course and with 12 minutes remaining, Daniel Hall put the game beyond doubt with a goal from Renwick Erving's cross.
