Calderwood keen to seize early chance to prove Leeds wrong

Mark Calderwood has not had to wait long for a re-union with his former Leeds team-mates. The prolific winger made what seemed a reluctant exit from Headingley at the end of last season and tonight makes his home debut for Wigan against the Rhinos.

"It was the first game I looked for in the fixture list and I didn't have to look too far," said Calderwood, who scored 106 tries for Leeds.

"The quality of Mark's record with us goes without saying and he is a very talented player," said the Rhinos' coach, Tony Smith. "Like all players who come up against their former clubs, I'm sure he will be wanting to perform well. He's a Leeds lad and he achieved a lot with the Rhinos, but we have both moved on now. We are well aware of Mark's strengths and weaknesses."

Calderwood was part of a Wigan side that lost to the Catalan Dragons in their opening fixture and the French club try to repeat that form across the Channel when they play their first away game in Super League at Salford tonight. "It was a great start for us," said the Catalans' chief executive, Grant Mayer. "But the concerns are the travelling and being away from home."

Bruno Verges, Remi Casty and Julien Touxagas are added to the squad against a Salford side that also made a good start to the season by beating Warrington last weekend.

Castleford's bid to re-establish themselves in Super League takes them to St Helens, who were in ominously good form at Harlequins last Saturday and plan to give Paul Sculthorpe his first game since August.

St George Illawarra's Australian international Shaun Timmins has said that this is likely to be his last season there before joining an English club. Hull will believe that they are favourites to recruit the Test centre or loose forward after coming close to signing him for this season.
