Ellen Gandy continued the form which brought her European and Commonwealth medals last year, while Fran Halsall's tears evoked memories of 2009 as the pair claimed the top two places in the 100m butterfly at the British Gas Swimming Championships in Manchester last night.

Nineteen-year-old Gandy had led the field into the final and she duly produced a mature, controlled swim to touch in 57.68seconds, thereby booking a place on the Great Britain team for the World Championships in Shanghai. Halsall was second in 58.99secs – just three months after undergoing ankle surgery – and she burst into tears following the race.
