Greg Henderson won the third stage of the Vuelta a Espana in Venlo yesterday and moved up to second place in the overall standings behind Fabian Cancellara.

The New Zealander broke from the pack during a sprint finish to put Slovenian Borut Bozic into second place, with Oscar Freire third.

Henderson won the 190km stage from Zutphen to Venlo in the Netherlands in 4hr 41min 01sec and moved from 27th place to second overall, 6sec behind Cancellara, who was 47th yesterday.

Dutch duo Johnny Hoogerland and Lars Boom, plus Spaniard Jesus Rosendo, waited just two kilometres to make the first breakaway. However, the lead between them and the main pack was down to a minute when Rosendo launched a solo attack around 30km out. Neither Boom or Hoogerland give chase. Rosendo continued alone until the peloton overhauled him with over 12km left and then it was down to the sprinters with Henderson claiming the spoils.

Today's stage four is the 225km ride between Venlo and Liège.
