Hockey: Turnbull helps City to play-offs

Steve Turnbull's goal for City of Portsmouth, taking his season's total to 12, and a second from Tom Boswell gave Portsmouth a 2-0 win over Maidenhead sufficient to secure the South Premier title and a place in this season's National League play-offs. Had Portsmouth slipped at the final hurdle, Purley Walcountians, with two goals from Matt Justice and a third from Lochlan Fincher in their 3-2 win at Wimbledon, would have taken the title on a better goal difference.

Portsmouth will be joined in the play-offs by Harleston Magpies from the Printwize East Premier, hoping to return after just one year's absence, and Harborne from the DTZ Midland. All three have previously been members of the National League. The Gerrard West winners, Bath Buccaneers, and Bowdon from the North, both of whom have failed before to win a place, complete the Regional League champions. Bromley or Blueharts from the Second Division of the National League look favourites to complete the play-off competition.

In the Women's Regional Leagues, Sevenoaks and Epsom have already qualified for the play-offs, Birmingham University look likely to go through in the Midlands, while in the West and North the games will go to the wire.
