Lawrence Okolie spars Dillian Whyte

Dillian Whyte is perhaps entitled to feel some sort of resentment towards heavyweight boxing. After being the No 1 WBC heavyweight contender for two years, he has had to watch while his contemporaries have all battled for heavyweight titles in recent months. With the evanescent Whyte seemingly being sidelined and told to wait his turn while Tyson Fury makes his comeback and Andy Ruiz Jr. stepped up to accept an avuncular opportunity from Anthony Joshua, Whyte now has an opportunity to make a serious statement of his own.

Whyte hasn’t fought since the tailend of last year when he defeated fellow Brit Derek Chisora for a second time with an eleventh round knockout, but if he is to get his much desired title fight against WBC champion Deontay Wilder next year, he must first beat the undefeated Colombian Oscar Rivas on Saturday night. But should Whyte lose, any hopes he has of securing a title fight anytime soon would surely be diminished.

Whyte was typically incandescent when discussing the upcoming bout and the chance to resurrect those long-held ambitions.

“Everyone I step in the ring with I believe I’m going to stop them man,” he remarked. “Sometimes I don’t get the stoppage but I do try my hardest. I do what I need to do and I focus on me.

“I train hard and I don’t leave no stone unturned. I don’t overlook anyone and I graft to make sure I was better than the last time out.’

Who is Oscar Rivas?

Oscar Rivas is a 32-year-old Colombian who has spent most of his career fighting in Canada, with a couple of fights taking place in the U.S and one in France. His last fight was against American Bryant Jennings where he won by technical knockout in the 12th round, retaining his NABF heavyweight title while securing the IBF International and WBO-NABO heavyweight titles in the process.

What’s at stake, what are their records?

No official title will be at stake but Rivas will be defending his undefeated record on his opponent’s home turf while Whyte will be hoping to keep his WBC championship ambitions alive.

Dillion Whyte’s record stands at 25-0-1 while Oscar Rivas’ is 26-0-0, however Whyte is the strong favourite to win the fight.

Whyte is the favourite for this contest, and rightly so. Fighting in front of a home crowd with an opponent who has only once fought outside of North America with his only defeat at the hands of the previously indomitable Anthony Joshua, Whyte should comfortably win.
