Boxing: Haye ready for better things after quick win

It took David Haye only 2min 5sec to improve his record to six wins but Ghana's Charles Adamu and Matthew Barney took the full 12 rounds over a very poor title fight at York Hall, east London last night .

Haye is only 22 but he has already established himself as one of the world's élite talents and last night he was simply too sharp for the veteran Greg Scott-Briggs, who collapsed twice from a variety of punches but was surprisingly brave. Haye has now stopped all six of the men he has beaten and he is looking increasingly like a fighter that is ready to challenge for something meaningful.

The nominal main event was a tedious fiasco and in many ways the referee, the usually reliable Terry O'Connor, did not stamp his authority on the fight.

Barney, the British super-middleweight champion, and Adamu never turned into anything resembling a boxing match. The Ghanaian did at least try to win the vacant Commonwealth super-middleweight title but Barney was content to hold in a maul that justly went Adamu's way.

Barney can now get on with defending his British title, possibly against the unbeaten Carl Froch before Christmas in a fight that would attract a lot of attention in Froch's hometown of Nottingham.
