Bondi pollution worry

Contaminated water has seeped on to the site of the controversial Olympic beach volleyball stadium on Bondi Beach, in Sydney, it was revealed yesterday.

Although the source of the contamination has not yet been confirmed, tests on water pooling have revealed low-level pollution, and the 50 workers on site will receive hepatitis A inoculations. The water is to be pumped into trucks today and taken to a nearby sewage treatment plant.

The construction of the stadium has been dogged by protests from residents, who say it will cause environmental damage and restrict access to the celebrated surf beach.

The International Olympic Committee ethics commission said yesterday that it is to continue its investigation of Atlanta's successful bid for the 1996 Olympic Games. The IOC did not identify the member under investigation.
