Gate man charged in connection with stadium stampede in Guatemala City

The man in charge of ticket booths and gate personnel has been arrested in connection with the stadium stampede that killed 84 people in Guatemala City on 16 October. There have been accusations that the game was oversold by as many as 10,000 tickets. At least two people are in custody for peddling bogus tickets.

Thomas Rongen, the 1996 Major League Soccer Coach of the Year with the Tampa Bay Mutiny, joined the New England Revoution as their new coach yesterday. Rongen replaces Frank Stapleton, who resigned during the season after clashing with his players and expressing frustration with the league.

Derby have given up hope of signing the Portuguese striker Paulo Alves from Sporting Lisbon after failing to bring him to the Baseball Ground on loan.

The Bristol City centre-back Alan McLeary suffered a suspected broken rib and collapsed lung in yesterday's Avon Insurance Combination game against Crystal Palace.
