Despite Jose Mourinho’s unhappiness at the lack of goals coming from his strikers, the Chelsea manager will not ask club owner Roman Abramovich to bring in any new faces in attack when the January transfer window opens.

Mourinho claimed that his side would be top of the Premier League had either Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o or Demba Ba scored on the same level as their nearest rivals, although he stopped short of criticising them or floating the idea of bringing in a replacement once the window opens on January 1.

With the Blues currently lying in third, five points off the pacesetters Arsenal level with second-palce Liverpool, Mourinho is hoping that the trio available to him will soon be finding the back of the net on a regular basis.

“If you tell me [Sergio] Aguero has scored already 10 or 12 goals, [Alvaro] Negredo 10 or 12 goals, [Edin] Dzeko four or five, [Wayne] Rooney eight or 10, [Olivier] Giroud eight or 10, [Daniel] Sturridge eight or 10, [Luis] Suarez 10 or 12 - if you ask me would I like my strikers to score eight, 10, 12 goals: Yes,” Mourinho said when speaking to reporters.

“If we had eight, 10, 12 [more] goals we would be top of the league. That's a reality but my strikers give everything and the team works hard.”

Mourinho refused to publicly criticise them though, instead choosing to stand by them in a hope to boost their confidence and install them with a faith that they will not be replaced in the short-term.

“What can you do more? We work, we keep working. That's the only way I know is to keep working,” continued Mourinho.

“Of course we want the best possible results but I am not waiting for players, I am not asking for players. This is a period for the club and this is a period of my team where we have to try and improve the players we have and try to build a future.

“It is my squad. For good and for bad it is my squad. Of course it is not the perfect squad but it is my squad and I work with them until the last day. To criticise does not help me. What do I win by criticising my players? I win nothing.”

Despite reports linking Mourinho with a six-month loan move for AS Monaco star Radamel Falcao, it seems the Portuguese will hold-off until at least the summer before any chance of a move becomes a reality.

Mourinho also has the option of choosing Romelu Lukaku to lead the line from next season, with the Belgian currently impressing during a season-long loan spell with Everton, although the pairs war of words has dominated recent news between the two.
