Tottenham midfielder Clint Dempsey looks set to leave the club this week to Major League Soccer side Seattle Sounders despite interest in him from Everton.

The USA international is expected to cost around £6m which would be an MLS record transfer fee, and he is reported to be offered a salary of £28m over a four-year-deal, which would be the biggest in the league’s history.

Dempsey joined Spurs from Fulham just last season, making 43 appearances across the campaign and scoring 12 goals as he usually featured just behind the lone striker of either Jermaine Defoe or Emmanuel Adebayor.

But the addition of Spanish striker Roberto Soldado is likely to force manager Andre Villa-Boas into a reshuffle of his attack, and it is likely that Dempsey will be given far less playing time than what he has had this season.

Tottenham confirmed they had reached an agreement on their official Twitter account, reading: "We have reached agreement with Major League Soccer for the transfer of Clint Dempsey.

"We wish Clint every success for the future."

The 30-year-old previously played for New England Revolution between 2004 and 2006, making 84 appearances in total and scoring 26 goals which attracted the attention of the Cottagers. Dempsey was a key player in Fulham’s Europa Cup run in 2009/10, when they reached the final only to lose to Atletico Madrid in extra-time.

He did though become the first American to play in a major European final, and he went on to continue his good form for Fulham over the next two seasons before Spurs signed him for a reported £6m.

On the international stage, Dempsey is just two caps shy of reaching his century, notching an impressive 35 goals along the way. The MLS transfer window closes earlier than the Premier League’s, with the August 8 deadline meaning Dempsey is likely to go within the next week.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported that Everton, Liverpool and Spurs will compete with AC Milan for the signature of 21-year-old Verona midfielder Jorginho.
