Sifting fact from fiction during the transfer window is difficult, but once it closes the lumpiest rumours tend to stick out.

This summer's transfer window has been among the most hectic and varied in memory - perhaps due to a World Cup both delaying business and bringing some lesser known players to light. Coupled with more money than ever at the disposal of clubs and Europe's top leagues becoming increasingly competitive - stories of reality and fiction have been in overdrive in equal measure.

Manchester United were linked with just about everyone - and signed many of them. Arsenal were expected to break the bank - and inevitably didn't. Indeed, few teams have had a quiet summer.
