Ron Vlaar has denied speculation linking him with a January reunion with Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.

The Aston Villa captain has been heavily linked with United with the Old Trafford club going through a defensive crisis. Vlaar was a centre piece for the Netherlands during the World Cup in Brazil, where Van Gaal led the nation to the semi-final.

With injuries to Jonny Evans, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling out suspended, youngsters Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett have had significant playing time for the season, while midfielders Michael Carrick and Daley Blind have also had to play at the back.

Vlaar, 29, told reporters that nothing was going on and that he may even sign a new deal at Villa Park.

"I have nothing to say because there is nothing going on," the 29-year-old said.

"I have spoken to the gaffer a few times (about a new deal) but that is it so far."
