Arsenal manager Unai Emery has said he is “very happy” with Aaron Ramsey’s attitude and focus ahead of his free transfer to Juventus.

Ramsey, who joined Arsenal from Cardiff in 2008, is expected to sign a five-year contract worth around £140k a week and will join the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.

However Ramsey continues to figure in Emery’s plans, with the Wales international preferred to Mesut Ozil in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday.

Ramsey delivered a man of the match performance and Emery afterwards revealed that he has been delighted with the midfielder’s attitude ever since it became clear he was to leave the club.

“We spoke three months ago when the decision was made,” Emery said. “Now, I am very happy with him. Because his focus has been very clear in the last month. His future is very important for his family and for him, but for us it is very important that he is okay to play like he did [against Chelsea].

“Today and two weeks ago, when we travelled to play Blackpool in difficult conditions because of the atmosphere and pitch, he told me that he wanted to play and he wanted to help the team. This is the spirit. To be okay and to want to play.

“And so today I did not ask him. Because I know he wants to play against Chelsea and he played with a good mentality and helped us with his quality.”

Emery also had some words of encouragement for Ozil, who returned to Arsenal’s matchday squad for the visit of Chelsea but remained on the bench throughout.

“He was okay to play today,” Emery said. “We decided that he would not play. I spoke with him, I wanted him to be ready for the match today and for the next matches.

“I have the confidence in him that, if he had played, he would have done what we wanted. In the next few matches we will need every player and we will need his quality.”
