Lilian Laslandes made Celtic pay for a series of missed chances when he struck a late goal which sent a tense Uefa Cup tie into extra time last night.

The giant Bordeaux striker stunned Parkhead when he stabbed in Laurent Batlles' cross in the 78th minute to cancel out Lubomir Moravcik's wonderful strike that had seen Celtic put a foot in the third round.

Celtic Park was a strange cocktail of anticipation and trepidation. More than 50,000 had come hoping to see Celtic put an end to a dreadful European run, yet the memory of how another French side, Lyon, won here in the Uefa Cup last season restrained the emotions.

Chris Sutton, who missed after five minutes when offside anyway, found space in the box to connect with Stilian Petrov's cross, but the striker's downward header slipped wide of Ulrich Ramé's goal.

Then Henrik Larsson was given a clear sight of goal by a splendid move involving Moravcik, Petrov and Sutton, but Ramé blocked the Swede's shot with his feet.

The gnawing anxiety that sets in after a series of misses like that began to spread around the stadium. Fine play had not been capitalised on. Worse, Jackie McNamara, who had been excelling in the role occupied by the injured Paul Lambert, had to leave not long after a jarring tackle by Lassina Diabate and was replaced by Colin Healy.

However, the Parkhead nerves were soothed nine minutes into the second half. No sooner had Ramé produced a spectacular save, palming Larsson's venomous free-kick over the bar, than Moravcik had beaten the keeper with an even more ferocious shot.

Moravcik began the move, finding Bobby Petta whose cross was headed out by Alain Roche. Moravcik met it with his right foot to crash a low drive past Ramé's dive.

Sutton had another effort saved soon after and Ramé produced an acrobatic dive to punch clear Petrov's menacing cross before diving at Sutton's feet, and then got a hand to prevent Larsson rounding him from Moravcik's sumptuous pass.
