Caniggia started in the bench but came on for Steven Milne just before half-time. By then, Dundee were already a goal ahead. Their playermanager, Ivano Bonetti, put the Dens Park side ahead when, after 30 minutes, the ball was played back to him at the edge of the Aberdeen box. The midfielder looked up before delicately chipping the Dons' goalkeeper, Ryan Esson.

Every Caniggia touch was cheered by the visiting fans and when after 53 minutes he shaped to set up another Dundee attack, Derek Whyte floored him to earn a booking.

But it was Dundee's notorious indiscipline that reared its ugly head next when, after 10 minutes of the second half, Gavin Rae lashed out following a tackle by Philip McGuire and was sent off.

However, with the Dons unable to break down Dundee, Caniggia, a veteran of Argentina's 1990 and 1994 World Cup campaigns, had the last word. He delighted the travelling support, swollen to nearly 3,000 by his arrival, when he grabbed the last-minute goal to make the three points safe.

Meanwhile, Celtic maintained their two-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 defeat of St Mirren at Parkhead. Their manager, Martin O'Neill, gave the former Hibernian striker, Didier Agathe, his debut but it was his fellow striker Chris Sutton who put the leaders in charge.

Lubo Moravcik, whose perceptive passing was a danger to St Mirren throughout the first half, hit an in-swinging corner for Sutton to head home at the far post. Henrik Larsson made the result secure.

Elsewhere, the bottom club, Dundee United, lost 4-0 at home to Hearts, Andy Kirk scoring twice in five first-half minutes to set the Edinburgh on their way to comfortable first away win of the season. United are five points adrift. Motherwell thrashed St Johnstone 4-0 and Garry Holt's late winner saw Kilmarnock beat visitors Dunfermline 2-1.
