Pep Guardiola has a 'huge job on his hands' at Manchester City, says Rio Ferdinand

Former Manchester United and England captain Rio Ferdinand says that Pep Guardiola will have a mammoth task on his hands to rebuild Manchester City.

The Bayern Munich coach will join City at the end of the season, after three years and three consecutive Bundesliga titles with the German giants.

City, who last won the Premier League in 2013-14, were disappointing in their Champions League semi-final clash with Real Madrid, losing 1-0 on aggregate after a limp showing.

Guardiola is expected to be given a large transfer pot to improve City in the summer, but Ferdinand believes the club have not progressed.

"I think they’ve gone backwards," he said after the game on BT Sport.

"They were a much more impressive team. They were a big, solid unit with lots of cohesion who played industrious football going football and were very, very solid at the back. I don’t think they’re that anymore.

‘Pep Guardiola, I think, has got a huge job on his hands coming here. It’s not going to be the type of team that’s as confident or as good as the team he’s got at Bayern.

"It’s going to be a totally different proposition."

Guardiola's Bayern were also knocked out of the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday by Atletico Madrid.
