Manchester United news: United could offer legend Paul Scholes a return to the club

Red Devils willing to speak with Scholes over managerial role with Under-23 side after Warren Joyce leaves club to take control at Wigan

Paul Scholes is in the frame to become Manchester United’s new Under-23 coach.

Following Warren Joyce’s departure to Wigan Athletic, The Daily Mail understands that United are looking for a new man to take on the job and Scholes’ name has mentioned as his potential successor.

The report adds that although the club are yet to have dialogue with the former England midfielder, it is believed that they would be willing to discuss the role with him if he wanted the job.

Scholes, who won 11 Premier League titles and two European Cups with United, has worked with the club in a coaching capacity in the past, most notably as one of Ryan Giggs' assistant managers during his stint as interim manager in 2014.

Scholes has also worked alongside club academy chief, Nicky Butt, to run training sessions for United's Under 18 and Under 23 sides and was also joint manager of the Under-19’s with his former teammate.

Butt, who is in temporary charge of the Under-23 team, will look to find a successor with the aid of club secretary, John Alexander, senior academy figure, John Murtagh, and executive vice chairman, Ed Woodward.

Scholes has previously expressed an interest in getting into management but is yet to find an opportunity worth taking. However, if a role at his former club were to come up he could be tempted into accepting.

The Manchester United legend has reportedly been offered the chance to become Oldham manager on numerous occasions but repeatedly rejected the League One side’s advances.

Scholes is joint owner of local non-league side, Salford City, with former United teammates Butt, Giggs, Gary and Phil Neville and works regularly as a pundit with BT Sport.

His recent controversial comments about the club during United’s 3-1 defeat to Fenerbahce sparked much debate on social media but apparently wouldn’t rule Scholes out of the running for the vacant role should he voice any interest over taking it.
