Middlesbrough's new Egyptian striker Mido has played down the abusive chanting aimed at him on Sunday by Newcastle fans, though he said he heard it clearly and understood the Islamophobic and paedophilia-related nature of it.

He responded to taunts of "Mido is a paedo" and "He's got a bomb, you know" with Boro's first equaliser, then put his finger to his lips in front of the Newcastle fans in a gesture intended to silence them.

"I just think they were taking the piss. Maybe some of them were drunk or something," Mido said.
