Manchester United vs Manchester City player ratings as Anthony Martial secures derby joy for Red Devils

United weathered a late storm from their rivals to secure a third derby victory in four to keep pace with Chelsea in the race for a top four finish

Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay secured derby joy for Manchester United in a 2-0 derby victory over Manchester City.

The Frenchman broke the deadlock after a clever free kick from Bruno Fernandes, but his tame volly should not have beaten the Brazilian, but his weak wrists allowed the ball to squirm into the back of the net.

City dominated large stretches of the match, particularly in the second half, with Raheem Sterling inches away from a cleaner connection to convert from six yards out.

But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side held on to keep pace with Chelsea and remain three points behind in the race to qualify for the Champions League next season. McTominay then punished another error from Ederson in stoppage time, with the Brazilian rolling out the ball in pursuit of an equaliser, but the Scot cut the pass off and slammed home into the empty net from range. David De Gea – 6

Didn’t have too much to do, but palmed away a Sterling effort early on and tipped over a Foden shot in the second half.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 7

Seemed to revel in his battle with Sterling along the flank.

Victor Lindelof – 6

Was largely untroubled throughout, but was solid when he needed to be.

Harry Maguire – 6

Seemed in fine health despite rolling his ankle earlier in the week, which will have put many United fans at ease.

Luke Shaw – 6

Man of the match against Derby on Thursday evening, but did not contribute as much on Sunday.

Brandon Williams – 6

Was more passionate than he was technically sound, but United fans won’t mind that too much, given the team’s overall performance.

Nemanja Matic – 6

Kept United ticking and didn’t need to do much beyond that.

Fred – 7

Provided plenty of energy in midfield. Was booked for diving, maybe a little harshly.

Bruno Fernandes – 7

Delivered an intelligent and technically impressive assist, chipping a quickly taken free-kick over Aguero and Gundogan for Martial to (somewhat fortuitously) score.

Anthony Martial – 8

Reacted sharply to Fernandes’ free-kick and showed decent technique to volley it goalwards, even if Ederson should have saved. Buzzed around from start to finish.

Daniel James – 7

Opted to shoot when slipped through by Fernandes, when crossing would have been a wiser move. Was energetic throughout, though, and kept City’s defence thinking.

Ederson – 3

Should have saved Martial’s volley in the first half. Almost catastrophically gifted the forward another goal early in the second half; did gift McTominay a goal in the dying moments.

Joao Cancelo – 6

Reacted well early on to prevent Martial from running through on City’s goal.

Nicolas Otamendi – 6

Passed well out from the back and took responsibility whenever possible. Headed narrowly over the bar on the hour mark.

Fernandinho – 5

Was dispossessed by Martial near the City goal in the first half. Thankfully for him, the resulting shot was poor.

Oleksandr Zinchenko – 5

Nearly played in United’s Martial just minutes into the game, but Cancelo covered for him.

Rodri – 5

Was part of a frustrated midfield that did not get a grip on the game until the second half.

Ilkay Gundogan – 5

Shouldered increased responsibility in De Bruyne’s absence, but did little of note beyond lacking awareness for Martial’s volley.

Phil Foden – 5

Would have been desperate to impress in a rare start, but was hindered somewhat by being deployed out on the right.

Bernardo Silva – 5

Was anonymous for much of the first half and was taken off on the hour mark.

Raheem Sterling – 6

Failed to impact the game before the break, but improved with the whole team in the second half.

Sergio Aguero – 4

Switched off for Martial’s goal. Found the net in the second half, but was just offside. Was replaced by Jesus on 58 minutes.
