Pep Guardiola has insisted that Manchester United remain a ‘top team’ despite their struggles under Jose Mourinho at the start of the new Premier League season.
United’s ambitions to pose a serious threat to Guardiola’s Manchester City , the reigning champions, have been damaged by back-to-back defeats after just three games.
Mourinho is under mounting pressure to turn fortunes around at Old Trafford after a summer defined by frustration in the transfer market and tension within the club.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Willy Boly - 8 Handed Wolves the lead with what initially looked like a header from a cross, but replays showed he used his arm to direct the ball in. Made a superb goal saving tackle to prevent Bernardo Silva from walking the ball into the net at the end of the first half.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Matt Doherty - 6 Had Benjamin Mendy to contend with on his side and stopping the left-back, who has started the Premier League in emphatic style, was a tall order for Doherty. However, while Mendy did get into some good areas, he did a good job to limit how often this happened.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Joao Moutinho - 5 Still looks like there is more to come from the Portuguese international, and he looked a little lost against City.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Ruben Neves - 7 Made the highest number of tackles in the game, and was equally useful to Wolves going forward. His range of incisive passing was key to Wolves’ attack, against City you have to be quick on the ball and Neves perfectly held together attacking moves.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Jonny Castro Otta - 6 Struggled to get involved in attacking moves and spent most of the game chasing Walker on Wolve’s left side of midfield.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Helder Costa - 7 Should have done better to beat Ederson when he was through one-on-one but had an effort saved. Embarked on a stunning run which included barging Mendy off the ball before finding Neves on the edge of the box.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Diogo Jota - 7 The way to get at this Manchester City side is to attack them with pace and purpose, Jota certainly did that and gave the defenders plenty to think about.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Raul Jimenez - 7 Had the ball in the back of the net to round off a well worked move but his effort was ruled out for offside. Gave the City defence plenty to think about all game.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Ederson - 6 Wolves preventing him from distributing the ball early at the start of the game by infringing him when he had the ball in his hands. That’s a new way to deal with his superb range of passing from the back, but it seemed to work. Stayed standing when Costa had a one-on-one chance and saved well.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Kyle Walker - 5 Was not able to get forward as much as he may have liked and was often caught high up the pitch by Diogo Jota, who got in behind the right-back several times.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Vincent Kompany - 6 Was pressed onto several mistakes at the back which led to passes being intercepted. Was slightly short of his brilliant best today. Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Aymeric Laporte - 7 Nobody was going to stop Laporte getting to Gunodgan’s cross and drawing City level. He charged through a crowded penalty area and met the ball with a bullet header which gave Patricio no chance.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Benjamin Mendy - 7 Some of his crossed from the left wing were exceptional. City are not blessed with tall and powerful forwards, however his low, driven passes from wide areas gave the strikers plenty to work with in the middle. Was however pulled up for a foul throw, come on Benjamin.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Fernandinho -6 Often so good at breaking up counter attacks before they happen, Wolves did well to launch their breaks with Fernandinho caught high up the pitch.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Ilkay Gundogan - 6 Took it in turns with Fernandinho to drop deep and dictate play. Pep Guardiola has been keen to get him playing as the holding midfielder and he showed that he can do that jobs in games like today. Provided a great cross from a free kick towards Laporte who equalised.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Bernardo Silva - 6 Linked up play very well and was unlucky not to score just before half time when he was dispossessed in the box by an excellent last-ditch tackle.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Raheem Sterling - 7 Back to his usual menacing self. Had a well hit shot from range well saved by Patricio and caused the Wolves defence problems all game.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings David Silva - 6 Silva seems to get better each season and has started another Premier League as one of the best midfielders in the land. Against Wolves even he was struggling to find space in a crowded midfield which meant he was less influential than he has been in previous games.

Wolves vs Manchester City player ratings Sergio Aguero - 7 Nearly scored in the first half with a low curling effort but his strike hit the post and went wide. Had a couple of chances late on but did not trouble the defence like he did before the break.

Guardiola claimed it was still too early to assess United’s title credentials but admitted the pressure his long-standing rival Mourinho is under comes as part of the job.
“They remain a great, top team,” Guardiola said. “We’re in August. There are a lot of points to play for and the real season starts after the international break, every three games, the travelling and no time to prepare for the games.
“Unfortunately it’s our job,” he added, on the pressure Mourinho is facing. “Our job depends on results. When we win we are good, when we don’t we are not good. When you get to that level, they are top, top managers.”
Manchester City 2018/19 Premier League profile While United are six points adrift of the early pace-setters, City are two back following their controversial draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers last Saturday.
Guardiola will hope that the reigning champions can bounce back against Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle United , who are expected to adopt an ultra-defensive approach at the Etihad in order to salvage a result.
“We dropped two, or won one, point at Wolves. The secret last season was when we did that we won the next game.
On Newcastle’s approach, Guardiola added: “Last season he did it against us away and ar home. I didn’t speak with Rafa so I don’t know. We have to adapt. He believes that’s the best way to get points and we’ll try to defend well against any system they want to play.
“We see the quality of our players. After five minutes I’ll know their idea exactly and pick up the behaviours of my players, the way they are training and what we need.”
