Manchester City news: Vincent Kompany facing further time out after latest injury setback

Kompany has missed nearly 700 days since 2012

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany missed out on Belgium’s 1-1 draw last night with rivals Netherlands after experiencing discomfort in the warm-up.

Kompany was initially named in the starting line-up but was replaced before kick-off by Watford's Christian Kabasele.

However, national team manager Roberto Martinez claimed that his captain was withdrawn as a precaution and has not suffered yet another serious injury.

Despite being considered as one of the league’s best defenders and captaining his side to the title on two occasions in 2012 and 2014, as well as the FA Cup in 2011, Kompany has been plagued by a series of calf and hamstring injuries and has managed just four appearances for his club this season.

Last night’s setback brings the defender’s total number of injuries to 31 since January 2012 and he has been out of action for a total of almost 700 days since then.

Unsurprisingly, the captain has not been able to feature significantly for either club or country, playing just 111 matches in the past four and a half years and it remains to be seen whether he will ever recover from his ongoing injury problems.
