Mame Biram Diouf: Mother of Stoke striker was killed in the Hajj crush

The crush is reported to have killed more than 1,000 people

The mother of Stoke City striker Mame Biram Diouf died during the stampede at the annual Hajj in Saudi Arabia that is reported to have killed 1,000 pilgrims.

Saudi authorities say the death toll from last month's tragic incident near Mecca stands at 769, but foreign media and officials that there have been more than 1,000 deaths, with a further 800 injured.

Stoke City released an official statement on their website, where they extended their "sincere condolences" to the 27-year-old Senegalese.

"Stoke City wish to extend sincere condolences to Mame Diouf following the tragic death of his mother," read the statement.

"The Club will provide Mame with all the support he needs at this extremely difficult time and our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and friends."

The incident is believed to have occurred as pilgrims queued to take part in the traditional “Stoning of the Devil” ritual in Mina, on the way to Mecca.

Diouf, who spent three years at Manchester United, joined Stoke in the summer of 2014.
