Leicester City news: Danny Drinkwater signs new five-year contract with Premier League champions

The 26-year-old joins Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, Kasper Schmeichel, Andy King, Wes Morgan and manager Claudio Ranieri in committing his future to the club

Danny Drinkwater says there is a “lot more to come” from Leicester City after agreeing a new five-year contract with the Premier League champions.

The 26-year-old former Manchester United academy graduate joins Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, Kasper Schmeichel, Andy King, Wes Morgan and manager Claudio Ranieri in committing his future to the East Midlands club.

After being named as Leicester's Player of the Year during their record-breaking Championship-winning season in 2013/14, Drinkwater established himself as an England international last term as Ranieri’s men lifted the first title in their 132-year history.

Drinkwater, who will now earn in the region of £80,000-a-week at the King Power Stadium, told LCFCTV: “I’ve loved playing for this club, it’s been perfect for me and my career and I want to be here for a long time to come. I couldn’t be happier.

“I’ve grown a lot as a player and a person in the last four years and Leicester City has been a massive part of that. I owe a lot to the staff here for helping me get to this point and I love being part of this team.

“We’ve been through so much together and I’m sure there’s a lot more to come.”

Securing Drinkwater’s long-term future is another coup for the champions despite losing midfield partner N'Golo Kanté to Chelsea for £32m earlier in the summer.

Despite his title-winning exploits for the Foxes last term, however, the former Cardiff City and Watford loanee narrowly missed out on the England squad for the European Championship.

Ranieri said: “Ever since I joined Leicester City, Danny has been one of our most consistent players. He’s a fantastic player and a fantastic man.

“He’s an important player for us and a very popular player in the dressing room. I want him to stay with us for a very long time.”
