Michu has signed a new contract at Swansea that will keep him at the club until 2016.

The four-year deal is a real coup for the south Wales side who made arguably the most inspired signing of last summer's transfer window.

Since joining from Rayo Vallecano for £2m, Michu has adapted brilliantly to English football, scoring 13 Premier League goals so far this season.

His goals and all round performances led to speculation that the Spaniard would soon be the subject of big money bids, however unwanted that interest would be at the Liberty Stadium.

Manager Michael Laudrup recently suggested the 26-year-old would be worth at least £30m and warned few clubs would be able to afford him.

"I don't want to let him go, sometimes the offer can be so big you have to accept but I really don't think clubs are going to pay so much money for him.

"We have the example of what Liverpool paid for Joe Allen (£15m), if they have to pay double for Michu there are few clubs who could afford that."

Today's announcement puts Swansea in a much stronger position to fend off interest in the 26-year-old. It will also provide a huge boost to the squad ahead of their Capital One Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea later tonight.

The player himself had no hesitation agreeing to the one-year extension.

“It was an easy decision for me,’’ declared Michu. “I am living a dream here at Swansea.

“I’m probably enjoying my football more than ever. It’s easy to play with this team and tonight I have the chance to reach the first final of my career.

“I’m really happy here in the city with the people, the club and the fans. Everyone has been so nice to me since I arrived.

“I think the club are happy with me because they have given me a new contract. I am certainly happy with the club.’’

Discussing the rumoured interest being shown in him, Michu will put Swansea fans at ease with him comments.

“I’ve read and listened to all the speculation, but it doesn’t interest me, and that's why I've signed a new contract.

"I’m enjoying myself too much because the team always tries to play football. All I think about is the next game and helping Swansea be successful. This is my life.’’
