Aaron Ramsey is ready to emulate two of the Premier League's best ever and become the force from midfield that drives Arsenal to success.

The 23-year-old enjoyed a brilliant campaign last season, scoring 16 goals in all competitions, including the winner in the FA Cup final, Arsenal's first trophy for nine years.

Ramsey now says he is ready to do for Arsenal what Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard did for so many years at Liverpool and Chelsea.

“I see myself as that midfielder who can score goals for Arsenal and I think that’s important,” Ramsey told the Daily Telegraph.

“It’s proven over the years to be important for successful sides to have goalscoring midfielders and, hopefully, I’ll do the same this season. The likes of Gerrard and Lampard have done it for many years on a consistent basis and that will be my aim now to do that.”

Ramsey started last season brilliantly, helping Arsenal to top spot at Christmas. But he was injured in the Boxing Day victory at West Ham and by the time he returned at the start of April Arsenal were out of the title race.

Last season was his best ever as a professional; Ramsey had never scored more than four in a single campaign.

“I’ve always felt I’d be a goalscoring midfielder. Before my serious injury, I had broken into the team and scored a few goals. I’ve always believed in my ability to do that and I’ve always been in goalscoring situations.

“But I haven’t been as composed as I was last season. I just felt like I had a lot more time in front of goal, whereas in the past I rushed a few decisions and shots that I made.”

Arsenal enter this season as optimistic as they have been since moving from Highbury to the Emirates. With an FA Cup in the trophy cabinet, the capture of Alexis Sanchez and the expectation that Mesut Ozil will flourish, Arsene Wenger's team look capable of a real title push.

They face Manchester City at Wembley in a game that could prove indicative for the coming season.

“Our season starts on Sunday and we’ll be going out to win the game,” added Ramsey. “It will be a good marker because we let ourselves down last year against the bigger teams.

“If we improve on that this season, we’ll have a great chance and we’ll be right there at the end.”
