Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton is being sued by the teenager he assaulted in a drunken incident after he allegedly left his victim with a facial scar.

Barton was released from a 74-day jail sentence in July after being convicted of attacking two men outside a McDonald's restaurant in central Liverpool in December, including Jordan Spencer, who was left with broken teeth after being punched by the football player.

Spencer, now 17, is pursuing a claim for more than the £2,500 in damages awarded him by Liverpool Crown Court, and his lawyer told the court Friday that the teenager was left with a scar on his face.

"The scar on Mr Spencer's lip can be seen from six foot away," Richard Edwards said. "There is a (second) scar on his lip, which may indicate the presence of a foreign body; and damage to one of his upper left teeth, which dentists have said is now dead. Mr Spencer had previously been proud of his perfect teeth."

Neither Barton nor Spencer were in court and the case was adjourned until after 30 April.

Barton has only just completed a four-month suspended prison sentence for an assault on former Manchester City teammate Ousmane Dabo, and also faced civil action by a former City trainee after allegedly stubbing out a cigar in Jason Tandy's eye at the club's Christmas party in 2004.

Tandy was released by Man City in 2006 after breaking his leg during a loan spell in Denmark, while Barton left the club in June 2007.
