Octopus update. The Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero, is promising a team of bodyguards to protect two-year-old Paul, who has predicted a Spanish win.

"I am concerned for the octopus", he says. "I am thinking of sending him a protective team." The Environment and Fisheries Minister, Elena Espinosa, went further. "On Monday, I shall be at the European Council of Ministers and I shall be asking for a [fishing] ban on Paul the octopus so the Germans do not eat him."

Rival oracle for sale

Ahmet Guzelsoy, of Istanbul's Atasehir district, is selling a distant cousin of Paul for 200 Lira (£85). Young Polat correctly predicted Turkish club Denizlispor would be relegated from the Turkish Super League. Guzelsoy has put an advert on sahibinden.com.

Dutch fear sinking feeling

Amsterdam's houseboat owners may be the only Dutch people hoping for a Spainish victory on Sunday. Drunken fans have a habit of climbing on top of the boats during celebratory canal parades. Dozens were sunk after the European Championship win in 1988.
