The Russian referee Valentin Ivanov grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons in this second round match between Portugal and Holland in Nurnberg, showing 16 yellow cards and four red to break the record for the number of cards issued in a World Cup game.

The Portuguese prevailed through an early strike from Chelsea midfielder Maniche, but it was Ivanov's card-happy display that disfigured the match, beating the 16 yellow cards and two red that Spanish referee Antonio Lopez Nieto issued in a group match between Cameroon and Germany in 2002. Costinha and Deco were dismissed for Luiz Felipe Scolari's Portugal, while Khalid Boulahrouz and Giovanni van Bronckhorst saw red for the Dutch in Marco van Basten's first competitive defeat.

Portugal went on to beat England on penalties in the quarter-finals, before losing to France in the last four.
