Flynn prepared to throw youngsters into Wales fray

Wales caretaker manager Brian Flynn insists he will have no concerns about blooding some of the country's young players when he names his squad for next month's Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) appointed Flynn as John Toshack's temporary replacement on Monday. The former Wrexham manager will go a long way to securing the job on a permanent basis if the team picks up at least three points from the games in Cardiff and Basle respectively.

Flynn earned the right to take over on a temporary basis after developing a good reputation from his time as coach of Wales' youth sides.

He took the Under-21s to the Uefa Championship play-offs for two successive campaigns and has also led impressive campaigns with the Under-17 and 19 sides.

Flynn has brought through the likes of Joe Ledley, Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale during his time with the youth sides and he admits he could call up some of the next crop of young Wales players for next month's games.

He said: "I'll have no worries whatsoever about putting some youngsters in. The Under-21s have had a fantastic campaign this year. There are a couple of them pushing for a place and one from the Under-19s who could be a surprise package.

"Maybe a couple from the Under-17s could play too. There could be a few surprises in that squad."

David Williams, Alan Curtis and Paul Jones will assist Flynn for the two matches but one person who will not be joining the 54-year-old's backroom staff is Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs.

There had been calls for Giggs to join the coaching staff of the next coach in order to groom him to take charge in the long-term.

Flynn has rejected those calls but he hinted that the veteran could be welcomed back into the squad to play against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

"I know Ryan well because I have coached him since he was 16," Flynn said. "[But] he won't be in the coaching staff for the next two games. I have my coaching staff in place."

When asked whether he would consider recalling Giggs for next month's qualifiers, Flynn said: "My telephone is always on, my door is always open, age is no barrier to me. Young or old."

Flynn also said he was undecided as to whether Cardiff striker Craig Bellamy would continue as captain. "It's a bit too early to make a decision on the captaincy. I'll be doing that in due course," Flynn said.
