Blackburn have made an approach for their former captain Tim Sherwood as they search for Steve Kean's successor as the club's manager. Sherwood has been assistant first-team coach at Tottenham since 2008 and wants a move into management, but is expected to turn down a move to Rovers.

Kean issued a statement on Friday claiming he was "forced to resign" at Ewood Park following talks with the owners, Venky's, in the week. But Eric Black, Kean's assistant, who assumed caretaker duties for yesterday's 1-1 draw with Charlton, insisted the decision had nothing to do with the board interfering in team selection.

"There was none whatsoever from the owners," said Black. "I named the team last night with the help of the coaches. It's been a bit of a whirlwind 24 hours and there will be a lot of speculation, but the owners will make the decision. We have to respect Steve's decision to do what he did and we move on."

Elsewhere in the Championship, in-form Huddersfield were beaten 3-2 by Watford. Peterborough recorded their first victory of the season, a 3-1 success at Hull, and Crystal Palace won 1-0 at Bolton

In League One, David James made his Bournemouth debut in a 1-0 defeat by Walsall. The former England goalkeeper has moved to Dean Court for the remainder of the season.

League Two leaders Gillingham suffered their first defeat of the season, Martin Allen's side going down 2-1 to Rochdale.
