Sheffield Wednesday have sacked their manager Alan Irvine after just over a year in charge at Hillsborough.

Irvine, 52, has paid the price for a six-game winless run, which culminated in Tuesday's 5-3 defeat at Peterborough. Chairman Milan Mandaric said: "It is unfortunate, but this had to take place. The decision has been made on what is in the best interests of the club."

The defeat at Peterborough left Wednesday 12th in League One, eight points off the play-offs.
