Derby warn against quick fix as Jewell departs

The Derby chairman, Adam Pearson, has hinted that whoever succeeds Paul Jewell as manager must make the best use of the existing squad rather than look to sign a glut of players in the transfer window.

Jewell resigned yesterday after 13 months in charge at Pride Park, after a run of only one league win in nine games left the club five points above the Championship drop zone. The 44-year-old's departure had been widely anticipated after Jewell failed to attend a post-match press conference after Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Ipswich.

Pearson, who has already received applications for the vacant post, said: "We believe we have a capable squad here. We have got enough good players and enough players have been brought in over the last year. The turnaround has been high and I would like to recruit someone who understands that."

Jewell's assistant Chris Hutchings will be in charge for Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie at Forest Green and the home leg of the Carling Cup semi-final against Manchester United on 7 January. The coach Mark Seagraves has also left the club. The 42-year-old, who worked with Jewell at Wigan Athletic, joined Derby last December.
