Yann Kermorgrant, the former Leicester City striker, scored against his former club to help newly-promoted Charlton Athletic to a 2-1 win at The Valley.

Bradley Wright-Phillips opened the scoring before Kermogrant claimed the second on a night which also saw Chris Powell's side announce the signing of former Stoke City striker Ricardo Fuller on a one-year deal. Andy King pulled one back for the visitors after half-time.

Goals from Reda Johnson, debutant Lozano Rodri and Jermaine Johnson helped newly promoted Sheffield Wednesday earn an impressive 3-2 win over Birmingham City.

Stale Solbakken claimed his first points as Wolverhampton Wanderers manager with goals from Stephen Ward, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and David Edwards securing a 3-1 home win against Barnsley, while Millwall came from behind to secure a 2-1 win at Peterborough United.

Middlesbrough came off the better as a flurry of late goals ended in a 3-2 win for the hosts against Burnley, while Bristol City made easy work of Crystal Palace in a 4-1 home win.

In Europe, Kris Commons' volley and Giorgos Samaras's header earned Celtic a 2-0 lead in Sweden against Helsingborgs in the Champions League play-off first leg.
