"It was vital we won," the manager said, "We played well in the previous games and did not get what we deserved. I don't think anybody would have bet on us keeping a clean sheet." But Wolves have scored only six goals in eight games. Barnsley's goal came in the 10th minute. When Paul Heckingbottom's header was blocked the ball broke to Richards, who toe-poked it in.

Colchester Utd 2 QPR 1

An eventful day for Wayne Brown, who had a hand in all three goals. Chris Iwelumo was first on target after nine minutes, firing in the rebound after Brown's shot was blocked. The latter then nodded down for Richard Garcia to thrash the ball in, but when QPR striker Marc Nygaard lobbed, Brown headed the ball into his own net. QPR have won only four of the 23 matches under Gary Waddock and are bottom. "It was a shambles," he said, "a complete embarrassment of a performance. If you know you are bottom you expect a bit more passion than we saw."

Derby County 1 Preston NE 1

The Rams' manager, Billy Davies, quit Preston for Derby in the summer in acrimonious circumstances, and was met by a torrent of abuse and reported to the police for inciting the crowd by celebrating his side's opening goal, a 44th-minute Steve Howard penalty. A minute later Danny Pugh equalised. "What am I supposed to do?" Davies asked, "sit on the bench and do nothing? I was expecting stick, but to be treated to such name-calling? I was very proud of what I achieved there with back-to-back play-offs."

Norwich City 0 Crystal Palace 1

Palace's £2.5 million Finnish striker Shefki Kuqi, not best pleased at being dropped, came off the substitutes' bench to score a 90th-minute winner as the Canaries lost at home for the first time this season. On for Clinton Morrison, Kuqi met Mark Kennedy's corner with a downward header to beat Paul Gallacher in the Norwich goal. "What this performance showed is that there is no shortage of spirit in the camp," the Eagles manager, Peter Taylor, said. "They looked solid all afternoon and gave a very good Norwich side plenty of problems."

Southampton 1 Plymouth Argyle 0

Polish striker Grzegorz Rasiak's sixth goal of the season, seven minutes into the second half, earned George Burley's Saints three points that lifted them to fourth in the table. "It was not much of a game but I don't think Plymouth had a chance," the manager said. "We were not at full throttle but I was pleased with the points and a clean sheet." In the first half the Argyle defender Hasney Aljofree was knocked out and play was held up for eight minutes. He was later released from hospital with a clean bill of health.

Stoke City 0 Burnley 1

The Clarets moved up to third thanks to Andy Gray's goal in the first minute and Stoke's misfiring attack - the Potters haven't won for seven games. After 35 seconds a Micah Hyde shot was blocked, but the ball broke to Gray and his shot flew in off the far post. "We had a few other chances and weren't ruthless enough, but other than that I thought it was a great away performance," manager Steve Cotterill said. The Potters' wandering striker Sammy Bangoura returned to the club, and starting line-up, but was substituted after 42 minutes.
