Mick McCarthy delighted with Wolves reaction

Mick McCarthy insists Wolves' 5-0 Carling Cup rout of Southend was the perfect way to respond to Saturday's hugely disappointing 3-0 home defeat at the hands of QPR.

McCarthy struggled to explain his side's abject reverse to the Barclays Premier League newcomers as they slumped to a second successive loss on home soil.

But last night's convincing third-round victory at Molineux was just the tonic for management, players and fans alike as Wolves got back on track.

"We only had one bad performance and of course, it's in the Barclays Premier League, it looked awful, it was awful," McCarthy said.

"It didn't make my lads a bad team, this was just the response we needed.

"It was a good performance and a much-needed victory to be honest for all of us, a much better performance."

Wolves also rediscovered the goal trail following three successive blanks, with David Edwards, Adam Hamill, George Elokobi, Adlene Guedioura and James Spray finding the net - although Sam Vokes is laying claim to the latter's strike having appeared to get the final touch to a shot which was heading wide from the 18-year-old debutant.

McCarthy said: "It's always nice to score goals, of course.

"If you get the goals like we did early on (two in the first seven minutes) then it makes it a difficult night for any team."

He added: "I didn't want to get beat but I didn't want to get beat by Millwall either because my house is still in and around there and one or two would have liked the banter with me if they had beaten me."

Millwall counterpart Kenny Jackett was livid with his side's display, accusing his players of "a lack of passion and enthusiasm".

And with the Lions now having now won just one of their last seven in all competitions, Jackett has called for a big step up - starting this weekend when Championship action resumes away to Derby.

"We've got a chance on Saturday to remedy that and I'll select the right side and start working on putting this type of performance right," Jackett said.

"We started poorly and never really got to grips with a talented Wolves side.

"It's not a good mix when you're not scoring and you're conceding goals, they're equally as important. On this evidence, we have to improve on both.

"We'll come in on Wednesday and we'll work again, we haven't got a lot of time to feel sorry for ourselves - we've got three vital league games next week."
