Diego Costa could land himself in trouble with the Football Association after appearing to spit towards referee Michael Oliver.

The Chelsea striker was caught on BBC coverage spitting at the feet of the man in the middle, after he was booked for an early challenge on Everton midfielder Gareth Barry.

Costa's booking was perhaps a bit harsh, the two players colliding after a loose ball - Barry clutched his head as if he'd been hit but there was little contact.

The striker argued with multiple Everton players after the challenge before being booked.

However, after he was shown the yellow card, a visibly angry Costa walked towards the referee and visibly spat at the floor right where Oliver was standing.

The referee did not react, although his attention appeared to be elsewhere.

Costa was later sent off for a second yellow card after again clashing with Gareth Barry, whom he appeared to bite during a heated exchange.

Chelsea blew their last chance at winning a piece of silverware this season after losing 2-0 at Goodsion Park.

Former striker Romelu Lukaku scored twice to send the Blues tumbling out of their second cup competition in only a week.
