Chelsea 2 Everton 0 player ratings: Diego Costa the villain but who starred at Goodison Park?

Romelu Lukaku was the star of the show as Everton defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Goodison Park to advance to the FA Cup semi-final.

The first-half was action packed whilst being short of any clear cut chances, a free-kick from Willian which Joel Robles comfortably turned over the bar after 42 minutes was as close as either team came. What the game was lacking in goalmouth action, it more than made up for in bad blood and thunder. Unsurprisinglym Diego Costa seemed to be at the centre of everything; the Spanish front man was in typically abrasive mood and picked up a yellow card inside five minutes for a swinging arm on Gareth Barry

The second-half began to open up with both teams creating space going forward, Ramiro Funes Mori had already come close, with a header sailing just over the bar, before Diego Costa missed a great chance of his own making - the former Atletico Madrid striker darting in behind the Everton defence and rounding Robles before missing from a tight angle.

On 77 minutes came a moment of exceptional quality to break the deadlock, Lukaku received the ball on the left wing before cutting inside Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic before twisting Gary Cahill inside out and slotting the ball past Courtois from an acute angle; it was a brilliant solo goal.

The former Chelsea man doubled the advantage five minutes later as he managed to stay on side and convert a Ross Barkley through ball past the on rushing keeper.

There was still enough time for a moment of madness from Diego Costa as he clashed with Gareth Barry and earned a second yellow card and an early bath, Costa may be in further hot water if the FA choose to investigate the footage for a potential bite on the neck of the midfielder.. Gareth Barry also found himself heading to the changing rooms early after a late tackle on Fabregas earned the Everton man his second yellow.

This game looked as if it could have gone either way as we approached the final 15 minutes but Lukaku’s quality was the difference as Everton book their place at Wembley.
