Champions' League qualifying round 1st leg

Tuesday

Young Boys Berne v Tottenham (7.45pm, Sky Sports 2)

Spurs play in the European Cup (more or less) for the first time since losing an epic semi-final to Benfica in 1962. Young Boys are not quite of that standard, but then again neither are this Tottenham side. The Swiss team finished runners-up last season for the third successive year and have lost Seydou Doumbia, who scored 30 goals last season, to CSKA Moscow.

Europa League qualifying round 1st legs

Thursday

Liverpool v Trabzonspor (7.45pm, ITV1)

Familiar ground for both Roy Hodgson and Liverpool, who would have been on opposing sides in last season's final had Liverpool not been squeezed out in the semi-final by Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan, who went on to put the skids under Fulham as well. Trabzonspor remain behind the big three in Turkey, though they beat one of them, Fenerbahce, to win their cup last season.

Rapid Vienna v Aston Villa (5.45pm, ITV4)

Rapid finished only three points off the top of the Austrian League and had the leading scorer in Steffen Hoffman, with 20 of their 80 goals. They have held on to him but lost other key players and made only a moderate start to the season, which began in mid-July, giving them an advantage over Villa in terms of competitive play. Could be a tight first leg.

Timisoara v Manchester City (7.45pm)

The Romanian club have just had their accounts frozen because of their debts. "£1m? You call that a debt?" City might snort. Piffling or not, it has handicapped their team-building under new coach Vladimir Petrovic, who was one of Arsenal's earliest foreign imports almost 30 years ago. At least the Europa League will give City somewhere to put all their spare players until they can offload a few.
