A side-footed penalty that went tamely wide of the post was the catalyst for Ghent captain Ilombe Mboyo quitting as captain of the club yesterday.

The twice capped Belgian striker stepped up in the 15th minute of his side's match against Waasland-Beveren on Saturday. Having sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, Mboyo struck the ball without an iota of conviction, before seeing it loop up and then roll wide of the post.

Mboyo was to confront fans at the end of the match, which Ghent lost 2-0.

During a press conference yesterday, Mboyo apologised to supporters and handed in his captain's armband.

"Maybe I would not have reacted if I wasn't captain. To show that I shouldn't have done so, I will no long wear the captain's armband," he said.

Referring to his post-match actions, Mboyo claimed he was reacting to racist taunts from a few supporters.
