Coronavirus: All you need to know about self-isolation

Manchester City's Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid is under serious threat of being called off after one of the Spanish club's basketball players was diagnosed with coronavirus, forcing all club members to be sent home to self-isolate for 15 days.

Real Madrid’s basketball team share training facilities with the football squad, and although the two teams are based in separate buildings, a decision was taken to shut the entire training complex following the positive test.

The unnamed basketball player showed symptoms of Covid-19 and was immediately tested, with health advice calling for all individuals who work at the training complex to enter 15 days of quarantine.

As a result, next week’s Champions League trip to Manchester, which is scheduled for Tuesday 17 March - just five days away - is highly unlikely to go ahead, while La Liga confirmed on Thursday that they have called off the next two rounds of the league.

A club statement read: “Real Madrid CF reports that a player from our first basketball team has tested positive after testing for the Covid-19 coronavirus.

“Since then, the recommendation has been made to quarantine both the basketball first team and the football first team, given that the two squads share facilities in Ciudad Real Madrid.

“Likewise, it has been decided to close the facilities of our sports city and it is also recommended that all Real Madrid personnel who provide their services in Real Madrid City remain in quarantine.

“The matches that were scheduled for today and tomorrow, corresponding to the Euroleague basketball and LaLiga soccer, will not be played.”

As a result, Uefa are reviewing the future stages of both the Champions League and Europa League, especially as there are already issues with the other quarter-final clash due to take place next week between Juventus and Lyon as the Italian side saw one of their own players diagnosed with coronavirus on Wednesday.

Defender Daniele Rugani confirmed that he has tested positive for the virus, resulting in the rest of the squad being placed in self-isolation, and the Italian league has already been postponed until at least 3 April due to the large-scale outbreak in Italy.
