Chelsea may be the rank outsiders for Champions League glory this season, but the semi-final draw against Atletico Madrid has seen readers of The Independent back them to triumph in the Lisbon final on May 24.

Jose Mourinho’s side will face the current La Liga front-runners for a place in this season’s final, with the victor taking on either Real Madrid or defending European champions Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga side remain the bookies favourites to defend their title – becoming the first club to ever do so since the European Cup was rebranded – but according to a recent vote carried out by The Independent, they are now third favourites to win back-to-back trophies.

Out of 498 votes, just 111 backed Pep Guardiola’s side to come through their semi-final clash and succeed in the Portuguese capital, compared to 167 for Chelsea and 146 for Real.

Bringing up the rear was Atletico Madrid, who despite leading the way in La Liga and dispatching both AC Milan and Barcelona – two of Europe’s great sides since the turn of the Millennium – in the last two rounds, earned just 74 votes.

How The Independent readers' voted for Champions League glory:

Bayern Munich (111 votes, 22%)

Real Madrid (146 votes, 29%)

Chelsea (167 votes, 34%)

Atletico Madrid (74 votes, 15%)
