Atletico Madrid club president Enrique Cerezo made a sexist remark towards a female journalist on Tuesday after she queried him as to whether the club had the transfer budget to renew Diego Godin’s contract.

“Some say that Atleti has no money to renew, that Griezmann took everything, what does he say?” She asked.

Before Cerezo retorted: “I do not talk about money because it is bad manners and less with a woman.”

Godin has spent over eight years at Atletico, making 258 appearances, but the 32-year-old’s contract is set to expire this summer. The club have a single-season contract policy for over 30-year-olds, which has proven to be a stumbling block during protracted negotiations

However, Cerezo stated that “there is no need to worry” and that “everything will be solved” in due course.

“There is no need to worry, everything will be solved, talk to him, we always talk to all the players every minute and every hour,” Cerezo continued. “The Atleti is generous with all those who work in the club ... even with journalists.”

The confrontation harked back to a similar incident featuring Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri when in charge of Napoli.

Sarri was forced to apologise to a female reporter who had asked him whether Napoli would struggle to catch Juventus in the title race, after he responded: “You’re a woman, you’re beautiful, for those two reasons I won’t tell you to go f*** yourself.”
