Football: Kiev struggle through

DYNAMO KIEV, last season's beaten semi-finalists, appeared to be heading out of the Champions' League last night when they trailed the Danish part-timers AaB Aalborg 2-0 at home early in the second half, and 3-2 on aggregate, in the third qualifying round tie.

However, two late goals scored by Andriy Gusin (74) and Maxim Shatskikh (90) gave Kiev a 2-2 draw and a 4-3 aggregate victory.

Galatasaray brought a welcome diversion from the suffering in Turkey caused by last week's earthquake, giving their fans something to cheer at home against Rapid Vienna with a 1-0 win for a 4-0 aggregate success.

Galatasaray swapped their usual red and yellow strip for a mainly black kit and both teams wore black arm-bands and held a minute's silence before the kick-off to remember the thousands killed in the disaster. Okan Buruk headed the only goal after 52 minutes.

The former European champions, Borussia Dortmund and PSV Eindhoven, also clinched their places with home wins over Teplice, of the Czech Republic and Zimbru Chisinau, of Moldova respectively.

Borussia won 1-0 for a 2-0 aggregate success, while PSV needed two late goals to secure a similar win.

The main surprises came in Slovenia where Maribor Teatanic knocked out France's Lyon 3-0 on aggregate after a 2-0 second leg victory. There was also an upset in the Balearics where Real Mallorca, beaten in last season's European Cup-Winners' Cup final, were held to a 1-1 draw by Molde of Norway, going out on the away-goals rule.

Spartak Moscow ended Partizan Belgrade's hopes of recovery with a 3- 1 win in Belgrade for a convincing 5-1 aggregate victory, the same aggregate success secured by Fiorentina, who beat Widzew Lodz 2-0 in Poland after a 3-1 first-leg win.

Celtic go into tonight's Uefa Cup qualifying round second-leg game against Cwmbran with a six-goal lead. There is talk in Glasgow of a record tally - the highest two-legg score in a European game was Chelsea's 21-0 defeat of Jeunesse Hautcharage of Luxembourg in 1971 - but John Barnes, the Celtic head coach, is likely to use the game to give some of his reserves a run-out.
