The chances of England's Under-21 side reaching the final of the Toulon international tournament suffered a major blow when they were beaten by 3-1 by Portugal in Arles last night.

To add to the English misery, Manchester United's 19-year-old winger Terry Cooke was sent off in the second half for violent conduct. Portugal took a first-half lead through Gomes but Tottenham's Steve Slade levelled straight after half-time. Beto, with a penalty, and the former West Ham player, Dani, added further goals for Portugal.
