Football: Denmark's windfall

DENMARK will not give the 12 million kroner ( pounds 1.1m) they made from the European Championship to war victims in Yugoslavia.

'We did not play in the finals because we put pressure on having Yugoslavia excluded,' Poul Hylgaard, the Danish football federation president, said. 'The money will go to promoting the game in Denmark.'

However, Denmark would contribute to a war fund for Yugoslavia if Uefa or Fifa set one up. Each of the 20 players will receive a bonus of 420,000 kroner, with the winning coach, Richard Moller Nielsen, getting one million.

One of Denmark's heroes in Sweden, striker Brian Laudrup, has joined the Italian Serie A side Fiorentina from Bayern Munich for pounds 3.4m, while Thomas Helmer, Germany's sweeper in the championship, moved to Bayern from Borussia Dortmund for pounds 2.8m.
