Football: Campbell rejects Spurs' new deal

THE TOTTENHAM Hotspur central defender Sol Campbell has indicated he could be for sale at the end of the season after shelving talks on a new contract.

The 25-year-old, a reported target of Manchester United, Juventus and Roma, has rejected Tottenham's latest salary package and will be able to negotiate a lucrative personal deal when he becomes a free agent under the Bosman ruling.

Campbell's current contract expires in 2001, but Spurs are likely to want to cash in on him before rather than look on as one of their most prized assets leaves on a free transfer.

Luis Boa Morte has agreed to join Southampton from Arsenal for an undisclosed fee. The Portuguese winger will link up with his brother, Bruno Leal, who moved to the Saints during the summer. The 22-year-old Boa Morte failed to secure a regular first-team place at Highbury, making 24 Premiership appearances in just over two years. He could make his debut against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

The Leeds United midfielder Harry Kewell has been named in a 20-man Australia Olympic Under-23 squad to play Southampton next week. The Australians face Saints on Thursday and a Kuwait Under-23 XI on 7 September.

The Leeds United defender Gary Kelly and the Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Keith Branagan have been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for next Wednesday's group eight European Championship qualifying tie against Yugoslavia at Lansdowne Road.

The Irish manager, Mick McCarthy, is to wait for a fitness report on the Middlesbrough striker Keith O'Neill, who suffered a groin injury in the warm-up prior to Tuesday's 3-0 home defeat by Leicester.

The Northern Ireland manager, Lawrie McMenemy, confirmed Tommy Wright's new status as Maik Taylor's understudy when he named his squad for next month's two Euro 2000 qualifiers against Turkey and Germany. Wright, who joined Newcastle United on a month's loan from Manchester City earlier this week, takes preference to Alan Fettis.

Mick Wadsworth has resigned as manager of Colchester United after less than a season in charge. The assistant manager, Steve Whitton, takes charge of the side.
