Manchester City are heading for a boardroom struggle after a consortium of businessmen, one of whom is believed to be the musician and supporter Rick Wakeman, announced yesterday they wish to oust "two or three directors". They have offered to invest up to pounds 10m but confirmed they do not intend to remove the chairman Francis Lee.

Coventry have signed the Plymouth winger Sam Shilton for pounds 125,000 which could rise to pounds 300,000 depending on appearances.

Struggling Wolves have been dealt a blow by the news that their goalkeeper Mike Stowell could be sidelined for six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a depressed fracture of the cheekbone.
