Round-up

Rob Edwards scored the crucial goal as Crewe closed the gap on the Endsleigh League Second Division leaders, Swindon, from eight to six points last night.

While the Wiltshire side were held to a goalless draw at Bournemouth, Edwards' 20th-minute effort brought Dario Gradi's side a 1-0 home win over bottom-placed Hull.

Blackpool leap-frogged Notts County, who play today, to go third on the back of a 3-0 defeat of Bristol Rovers at Bloomfield Road. Burnley moved into fourth by beating managerless Peterborough at London Road, Paul McDonald and Peter Swan scoring in their 2-0 win. Wycombe went sixth with a 2-1 home victory over York.

Preston and Chester scored wins at Northampton and Rochdale to move to within a point of the Third Division leaders, Gillingham, who were held to a goalless draw at Exeter.

The former Birmingham striker Andy Saville slotted home an 88th-minute winner to earn Preston a 2-1 win at the Sixfields Stadium, and ex-England striker Cyrille Regis, Kevin Noteman and former Sheffield Wednesday man Gary Shelton scored in Chester's 3-1 victory.

Neil Trebble's 89th-minute equaliser denied the Plymouth manager, Neil Warnock, a winning return to Scarborough, whom he guided into the League as GM Vauxhall Conference champions in 1987.
