The India batsman failed a fitness test on his left elbow during a practice session at Trent Bridge yesterday. He did not play in the recent Videocon Cup in the Netherlands because of the problem, although he has not been ruled out of the ICC Champions trophy, which starts on 10 September.

A fresh fitness test will be carried out on the elbow after the NatWest series is over. The three-match series takes place tomorrow at Trent Bridge, Friday at The Oval and Sunday at Lord's. The Indian team manager, Goutam Dasgupta, said no replacement has been sought.

Elsewhere, Warwickshire went some way to securing League First Division survival with a four-wicket victory over the champions Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens. Now they will be hope to beat the C&G Trophy winners Gloucestershire at Bristol on Saturday to confirm their top-flight status.

In scoring his sixth League half-century of the season, from 56 balls, Matthew Maynard became the first Glamorgan player past 8,000 one-day league runs.
